Back Home For A While

We arrived back in Melbourne (where does all this traffic come from!) last weekend and will be here for a few weeks.  It’s B’s 30th this Friday and he is having some of his friends and family over for drinks and nibbles on Saturday, so the next couple of days will be spent preparing food and tidying up the garden in preparation.  I know I’ve said this before, but I’m finding it hard to believe my baby is 30. There must be some mistake – we’re not old enough to have a 30 year old!    It’s funny, while my own age doesn’t worry me one bit, it’s the children’s milestones that really bring home how quickly time passes – first days at kindy, school, high school, new job, then all of a sudden they are out on their own and living their lives and the years have gone in a flash.   While the quickly passing time sucks a bit, the great thing is seeing how well they have turned out – happy, confident, nice adults, doing well in their lives.  Not much more you can ask for really.

We will be using the time back in Melbourne to catch up on some personal stuff and also, hopefully, meeting up with friends and family.  While we’ve only been gone for about 10 weeks, it seems as if we haven’t seen any of you for ages – so if you’re reading this we’re open to invitations for dinner, drinks etc.

Well, I’d better get to work, there’s sausage rolls and pasties to be made, and a pile of washing to do!

Countryside Park Characters

There are also 3 hens and a rooster, as well as a bunch of ducks, a rabbit a guinea pig, and an aviary with budgies and cockateils. There were 11 hens a couple of weeks ago, but a fox or something got into the henhouse and overnight we lost 8 hens.  It was a very sad time in the park.  Now the chooks get locked in at night.  Just before the 8 hens disappeared we were starting to get heaps of eggs, now only 1 is laying, but she’s been pretty busy and is doing a fair job of it.  You might not be able to tell from the photo, but the rooster looks like he has had a very hard life (well, only him and 11 hens, of course he did!) but the fox incident had a very bad effect on him, and he looks even more stressed now than he did prior to that night.  We’re not sure if he was actually in a fight with a fox and managed to get away, or if he was literally scared almost to death!  He is starting to recover and his feathers have come back.

There is also George the peacock, but he was camera shy today.  George has the run of the caravan park and normally he hangs around Mick and Deb’s dog Maggie, (this is the third dog called Maggie I’ve met over the last few months – maybe I should change my name!) annoying the hell out of her.  He also normally spends a lot of time sitting on the railing of one of the permanent holiday van’s verandah, making a hell of a mess.  I haven’t seen him for a few days, but if I can get a photo of him I’ll put it on the site later.

One of the human residents of the park (located directly behind our van)  has a bird which whistles continuously, but unfortunately it only knows two tunes – Pop goes the weasel, and the theme music from Bridge on the River Kwai.  Have you ever had a song get in your head that you can’t get rid of?  Well, I now really hate Pop goes the Weasel! Although I still like the music from Bridge on the River Kwai.

Kalaru is a  pretty little town and the beach is beautiful.

This is the main part of town. On a sunny Sunday morning the bakery is packed with people sitting in the sun having coffee.

Mimosa Rocks (great restaurant)

There is a really great restaurant here called Mimosa Rocks, which does great gourmet pizzas.  It’s really popular with the locals (even though it’s a bit pricey – gourmet pizzas are around $24 each, with mains roughly $18-$25) and if you don’t make a booking it can be nearly impossible to get in.  Well worth checking out if you’re in the area and looking for a good meal.

Well, that’s it for now.  Hopefully will catch up with you all when we get back to Melbourne.

Park Residents

The title of this post suggests that you might be reading about some of the park residents here, and that was the original plan. However, I’ve had to edit the original words due to gremlins in the works again! I’d taken photos and put words together to introduce the animal residents in the park, (while we do have some really lovely permanents in the park, in general, the animals are much more interesting) but once again I’m having problems downloading photos! We’ll fix it and post that stuff once we get home and have access to really fast broadband. Meanwhile, here’s a brief update on what we’ve been up to.

I know I’ve been really bad at updating this site and I could put it down to being really, really busy, but I’m sure none of you would believe that, so let’s all agree that I’m really slack! What is true is that nothing terribly exciting has been happening, or at least I didn’t think you would find it very interesting reading (although after saying that to someone today, I’ve been told people still like to know what we are up to, even if we don’t think it’s of much interest). We’re still working at Countryside Caravan Park with Karen, Deb, Mick and Gary, but it’s a quiet time of year and not too much has been going on. There have been people in and out of the park over the past few weeks, and some of them have been really nice and have shown a lot of interest in our van, but apart from that we’ve just been working and hanging out in the park on our days off. The weather has been pretty good – some rain at times, but mostly beautiful sunny days, even if they are cool. We’ve managed to play golf twice in the past couple of weeks, once at Tura Beach Country Club (a beautiful course, right on the beach, with spectacular views of the coast from the 8th hole – shame we didn’t have the camera with us!) and one at Bega (which I wasn’t very impressed with) but that’s about it. We are still enjoying our time here though.

We did have a slight issue with the van – we couldn’t get any hot water for a couple days. David checked out the gas and ignition system of the water heater, and we ended up having to get Chas the plumber in to have a look. Chas found the problem – a spider had made a web in the air gas mixture tube which was very difficult to see, and the web was interrupting the gas flow to the burner, but once Chas cleaned it out everything was well, even for the spider, who made a quick getaway once his nice warm home was discovered! David thinks it was probably there from day 1, and since the gas hot water system is working much better (and more quietly) since it was fixed, that’s probably quite likely. Must make sure we check for critters from time to time.

We will be in Melbourne for a couple of weeks soon – it’s Ben’s 30th birthday so we’re going home for that and will use the rest of the time to catch up with you all, do some shopping, get our taxes done etc. Not quite sure exactly how long we will be home for. We’ve got a 2 week job lined up in October at a park in Foster, and hopefully we will find some other work when we finish there. Meanwhile, we hope to catch up with everyone when we’re at home, and keep those e-mail’s coming, we really love to get them.
