Because we walked everywhere in Roma, the truck was sitting for a while, so we took it for a drive to St George, just under 200km south of Roma. The weather wasn’t the best – humid and overcast, although the sun did come out every now and then. And since St George advertises itself as the Inland Queensland Fishing Capital we also put the fishing rods in just in case
. St George is a nice little town on the Balonne River about 500km west of Brisbane. There’s not a lot there, a couple of pubs, a few shops and cafes, but it’s really pretty. There’s a lovely riverside walk lined with river gums, birds and a good walking path, as well as a couple of nice little parks which are good to sit and have a picnic, or just to relax. The visitor information centre is across the road from the main part of the walk and has information on the history of the town and the cotton growing which is quite interesting.
We went to Beardmore Dam as it’s supposed to be pretty good for fishing, but they weren’t biting the day we were there. Like a lot of dams in Queensland, the water was fairly low, so I’m not sure if that had something to do with it or not. It would be good to see it now after all the rain that Queensland has had.
